JOSEPH VINCENT MCCULLOUGH
1928 – 2012
We mourn the passing of another CCGS member, Joe McCullough. Joe was a member of the “greatest generation”. He was 83 years old and a man of incredible character with unwavering values. He graduated from Central Catholic High School in San Antonio and received a BS at Texas A&M University in 1951 with a degree in Geology. Joe later served in the military and advanced to Regimental G.S. (Operations Officer).
Joe worked as an oil and gas exploration geologist for Carl Oil & Gas for 36 years. As Exploration Manager with Carl, they expanded from South Texas to East Texas and Louisiana. A little known fact is that as Exploration Manager, Joe hired a young wide- eyed geologist named Rock Robertson (now deceased) and survived by his son Greg. Joe appreciated the vision of Rock and invested along with Mosbacher in 150,000 acres in a wild new concept, which became the fabulous Giddings Austin Chalk Field. Joe was involved with too many Frio, Vicksburg, Yegua, and Wilcox discoveries to list. When Carl Oil & Gas merged with McFarland Energy, Joe became an independent geologist and soon invested with and mentored Mike Pedrotti, Tom McCullough, and Mike Lucente with LMP Petroleum. After the tragic loss of his son, Tom in 2002, Joe showed his gentlemanly poise and incredible faith to carry on with high spirits and dignity.
Joe has served in many roles with the CCGS including President. As of late, he was active in an advisory way with Ray Govett of the Historical Committee. He will be missed by us all, but will never be forgotten.
