Geology is the science and study of the solid and liquid matter that constitutes the Earth. The field of geology encompasses the study of the composition, structure, physical properties, dynamics, and history of Earth materials, and the processes by which they are formed, moved, and changed. The field is a major academic discipline, and is also important for mineral and hydrocarbon extraction, knowledge about and mitigation of natural hazards, some engineering fields, and understanding past climates and environments with reference to present-day climate change.

Etymology
The word "geology" was first used by Jean-André Deluc in the year 1778 and introduced as a fixed term by Horace-Bénédict de Saussure in the year 1779. The science was not included in Encyclopædia Britannica's third edition completed in 1797, but had a lengthy entry in the fourth edition completed by 1809.[1] An older meaning of the word was first used by Richard de Bury to distinguish between earthly and theological jurisprudence.

Peggy Wilson Elementary School - Houston, Texas:

Mr. Hopkins,

Thank you so much for the Corpus Christi Geological Society’s donation of the beautiful framed South Texas Ice Age poster. It is a wonderful piece of art as well as being an interesting educational display that many of our students have already enjoyed. The book that goes along with it provides some great additional information about the animals in the picture. I’ve already had conversations with students who have spent several minutes pouring over the picture, picking out animals with which they are familiar and learning about the animals that are new to them.

The above photo shows several of our students in front of the picture where it now hangs in my office. As soon as school is out, I will be transferring it to its permanent home in our library (hanging on a brick wall—there will be some drilling involved!) right above a display cases from our Science Resource Center which already draws the regular attention and fascination of our students. This will be a great spot that will maximize the number of students who have time to study it and enjoy it.

I’d also like to thank the thoughtful people at CGGVeritas for their role in choosing Peggy Wilson Elementary as the School to receive this donation. I am especially thankful to Machelle Warrick-Brazile, whose daughters Kenedi and Taylor both attend Wilson and are shown in the attached photo.

Thanks very much to all of you. I know the students of Peggy Wilson Elementary School will enjoy your gift for many years to come.
