Geology is the science and study of the solid and liquid matter that constitutes the Earth. The field of geology encompasses the study of the composition, structure, physical properties, dynamics, and history of Earth materials, and the processes by which they are formed, moved, and changed. The field is a major academic discipline, and is also important for mineral and hydrocarbon extraction, knowledge about and mitigation of natural hazards, some engineering fields, and understanding past climates and environments with reference to present-day climate change.

Etymology
The word "geology" was first used by Jean-André Deluc in the year 1778 and introduced as a fixed term by Horace-Bénédict de Saussure in the year 1779. The science was not included in Encyclopædia Britannica's third edition completed in 1797, but had a lengthy entry in the fourth edition completed by 1809.[1] An older meaning of the word was first used by Richard de Bury to distinguish between earthly and theological jurisprudence.

The 4 Facts that are presented to the students about the map are now being placed on the map in the lower lefthand corner. We realize that not all teachers have had geology and we want to have pertineint information permantely attached to the map for student/teacher review in the coming years. The sheet also includes 5 quiz questions and websites to get more info from teh CCGS and the USGS.

The point of this one is that I went to my hometown to vist my father for a week and I had 5 of the framed maps shipped from MAPSCO framing in Addison, Texas. The 5 maps were at my fathers house along with 10 rolled maps. The arrangement with MAPSCO is that they will ship the maps laminated, framed and annotated for about $180 depending on shippping. I just charged on my credit card and they shipped them.

Other geolgoists could use this same technique to place these geologic maps in their hometown. Several of the yellow pins are from geolgists sending them to their home town - Brent Hopkins in Penn Pan, New York for example.

This is another great way to get these maps in all the the schools. The CCGS will provide you with a specimen of calcite for each student, the 4 Facts sheet, the speech - you just have to call the school and arrange a time to present to a classroom of eager students and very appreciative teachers.
